    Fly cut it with your homemade valve but grease up the gap between the piston and cylinder. Piston is at top dead, vacuum and wipe the metal out then rotate the crank. The piston can only go down leaving the little grease protector up high to be wiped away. No metal will go past the top of the piston. As for dome thickness, you are cutting a circle cut on an angle, the area of thin material will be so small, if it is even that thin when done. It’s not like you are reducing the dome thickness by .100” for a complete 1.6” diameter area.

    I might not be the cheapest or the easiest but look like to me you would be the best overall to pull the engine apart have the block deck evenly on both sides and get new Pistons with valve reliefs that you want and put the new heads on there.

  • @brianbloom1799

    Nick , How much did you cut the heads, and you just said there is a 20 thousands difference from piston to deck height, Nick you really should have decked the block, I know you’re trying to save money for the man but now you have, heads that are cut differently, I mean if the man is bothered by the hp to torque differents he should pay the difference, to do it right

    Honestly Nick I would just open the engine up all the way. Mag the block and heads and then put new hardened seats in the original heads true out the heads and block true the cylinders rebalance the crank and reassemble. Oops and a multi angle valve job to the new seats. Honestly just rebuild the engine to better than stock but not a 1/4 miler. Great Video Thank You 🙏

    8:56 how come you didn’t cut the seats out and install new ones i’ve had this done before on the LA 318 heads to 302 casting the seats were sunk. I had them cut out new ones installed broke my compression right back up where it belonged. I had a big block Chevy 327 tall deck, same thing sunken valve seats. Had them cut and installed. New seats did a fresh three angle valve job and they were meant. that was a stock 427, 425 horse when I got done and refreshed it with a new set of rings and rework the heads. The actual horsepower numbers were closer to 480 and it made just shy of 500 foot pounds. My point is cut them out prescience of new seats. The only drawback is if it’s not done properly they’re gonna mess up and fall out in the engine will be toast.

    Yes you need at least .030 of radial clearance. .050 is best

  • @doughelmle6575
    @doughelmle6575 Час назад

    Hey nick,You already know this but if you cut the valve relief .090 in to that piston ,it could compromise the integrity of the crown of it. It is a forged piston though . Then you also have the issue when you plane the one head a little , the intake needs to be cut also. .010 isn"t much but both heads were already planed .020. I know you will do the right thing while keeping your customers budget in mind.

  • @JalopyTechnology
    @JalopyTechnology 2 часа назад

    We used to buy flycutters and cut the pistons in place without issues. This was before aftermarket slugs were readily available. I would installl new seats in the 906 heads, do a little pocket porting, clean up the head intake and exhaust ports. You may want to advance the cam timing to get more HP at a bit lower rpm... more power for daily driving.

    Hi Nick, I have had a customer turn off the motor out front of my workshop, then go to leave and the motor would NOT turn over..The Milodon Gear drive loosened away from the camshaft, and all the valves were left open..NO engine damage. Could that have happened with the valve ? The engine was turned off and the valve was fatigued and ready to break...They are 2 piece valves, from manufacture, !!. So the Engine wouldn't turn over, so they pulled the pan to investigate, and it had the spun bearing fell in the pan, by accident.. ??..Could the wrong pistons have been put in it at the Factory when it was assembled..Did they make Truck engines with the good rods but low compression pistons ?

    Do you degree your cams when you build an engine? What are the differences between the 906 and 946 heads? My 440 had the 906 castings. Which heads are better? Someone told me the 915 heads were really good, too.

    I have cut valve reliefs by welding pieces of file to old valves ( intake and exhaust ) and shaping / sharpening the file material, I made them slightly larger than the valves I intended to use for side clearance, worked perfectly looked correct and checked clearance using modeling clay , several engines with these mods still running 30 years later .

    My guess is that you are correct about the black rod color indicating a spun rod bearing. They caught it just as it started squeeling,the removed the rods and pistons and replaced them with another set with 90 thousands shorter rods , like for a big truck, twin screw grain truck with a 440 ? Just my thoughts Nick

    Nick, just have hardened seats installed in the original heads, and that will solve the sunken valve problem. Just make sure the new seats are installed to a depth that allows proper clearance with the cam selected. Your client needs hardened seats anyway due to today's unleaded fuel.
